EVS MINOR PROJECT: A VISIT TO KOLLAKAL THAPOVANAM

Rather than a spot to study, Kollakal Thapovanam is a place to feel. There you sense the emotions of nature. The dampness and shades welcome the explorer to a cool and serene ambience. Every step into Thapovanam unfolds the mystery and unknown facts about nature. Mrs. Thankamani D, an environmental Engineer and daughter of Devakiyamma, the matriarch of Thapovanam, takes the explorer through the forest with prompt guidance and explanation about each and every species. She details the migratory birds, butterflies and the ecological balance of their vast man-made forest covering five acres. Kamandalu, used by Rishis; Kumbil, used for making wooden carriage for the deities (Jeevatha); Neermaruthu, having medicinal values; Shimshipa tree, beneath where Seetha devi lamented over the memories of Rama as per the legends, Karinjotta, used for making Methiyadi; umbrella tree with an umbrella shaped foliage; Kayamboo etc, leave an awe-factor in the minds of enthusiasts. One among the varieties you can see is Pterocymbium tinctorium. Devakiyamma named it Buddha Tree, realising its self-serving nature.

Mrs. Thankamani D becomes eloquent on Odal Valli, Thengumthali, Karilanchi, Poomaruthu and the like. The more you explore ‘Thapovanam’, it unleashes most of its greatness- Putranjiva, Naagathali, Irumbarappan, Thavitta, Venga, Nenmeni Vaka, Neermaruthu humbly share their stories.

Two ponds, plants yet to be identified and surveyed, migratory birds and butterflies, insects, and their co-existence in utmost silence altogether define Thapovanam in its magnificence. A must-visit spot at Muthukulam, Alappuzha, which leaves an indelible mark in every viewer.
